WEEK 1: YUMIKO YOSHIOKA: BODY RESONANCE

yumiko.jpg

Belonging to a third generation of Butoh artists, Yumiko has developed a personal style of bodywork called Body Resonance, which integrates Butoh practice with features of Noguchi Taiso gymnastics and various other Asian training methods to help prepare the body to receive and transmit dance and inspirations. Body Resonance starts from the idea that the world, including our body and soul, consists of vibrational waves that create constant resonances like echoes. When we tune our body to that frequency, we receive images, feelings and sensations accordingly. For this to happen, we need first to shake off unnecessary tension. In effect, we make a white canvas of our body to paint new colour on it. Yumiko teaches this as neutralization, encouraging a close-to-zero state, scouring off rust and polishing antenna to catch waves from profound layers of the body. The transformations and concentrations of dancing break up the eggshell of form. They melt down the armour of our ego, allowing resonant memories to emerge from our cells that are floating in the primal liquid of time. Website

WEEK 2: MAUREEN FLEMING: DANCING THE INTERNAL BODY

Maureen Fleming_Axis Mundi_300dpi_photo by Lois Greenfield.jpg

Access your creative inspiration and learn to move in new and transformative ways. Maureen Fleming, acclaimed New York City choreographer and performance artist, creates surreal movement poetry that gives birth to a new vision of the body. In this workshop, Maureen Fleming shares her distinctive approach, which originally arose from the avant-garde Japanese dance movement: butoh. Her unique approach adds catharsis and alchemy to the traditional dance techniques of strength, flexibility, and balance. In a disciplined way, Maureen expertly guides you to your deepest creative core, helping you discover and reveal the transcendent that resides in physical form. You will learn:

  • FLEMING ELASTXX TM , original exercises that initiate movement and voice from the innermost layer of muscles, promoting efficient movement and increased flexibility
  • Transformative imagery to challenge the way you think and help you move past physical form
  • Massage that incorporates stretching and shiatsu techniques to increase joint flexibility and unlock energy blockages

This deep, regenerative inner work allows for a more complete realization of your personal and creative vision and is geared for directors, actors, dancers, singers, yoga enthusiasts, therapists and anyone interested in discovering their movement potential through an efficient and integrated training that becomes a part of daily life. WEEK 3: ANASTAZIA ARANAGA & MIZU DESIERTO: ORIGINAL // FREEDOM

Staz.jpg

Anastazia & Mizu first met in 1995 and have been conspiring, loving, rebelling, kicking, dancing & lovingly deconstructing artistic space and identity together ever since. The original BAD UNKL SISTAS, we have each gone on to create unique bodies of work influenced by our mutual passion for deep communion, collectivity and the development of community through butoh, dance and ritual performance. This workshop will be full of unknowns, delicate presence, deep stillness, rampant chaos, visceral intimacy & care. Together we will support each other throughout our days to enter a collective state of presence and charge...discovering our movement as it arises from the spaces between the cultivated energy of our shared experience. This workshop will culminate in a collective performance offering and installation on Sunday evening. MIZU INFO   BAD UNKL WEBSITE

WEEK 4: HARUKO "CROW" NISHIMURA: EMBODIMENT & PRESENCE

Crow Floor.jpeg

This class will explore what it means to be moved through deep listening and the guidance of sound and specific imagery. We let go of our individual will to manifest shapes and surrender to the richness of the present. My training is rooted in butoh dance, physical theater, improvisation and music. We will practice tuning into what the space, our body’s subtle energies and our  physical memories can move through us. We will practice both playfulness as well as pushing ourselves to our edge.We will hone our embodiment and observation, bearing witness to each other’s discoveries. In addition to dancers and performers, creative and curious people from all walks of life are welcome  including those with no movement experience. This workshop will culminate in a performance offering on Sunday evening. Website
