Yocto Theatre--the company that brought you “Genuis” and last year’s hit, “CockTales,” returns to Fertile Ground this year with the world premiere of “Free Box”—an object-based improvised adventure. The conceit is simple: inspired by the Portland phenomenon of free boxing, you—the audience member-- are invited to bring an item to put in our free box. The show’s performers will have no exposure to the box before the show and will have no idea what’s in there. They will proceed to improvise a show using its contents. What’s it gonna be? A lamp? Textbook? Photo album? A Neil Diamond Greatest Hits Cassette? As each object is discovered, it will influence the course of the improvisation. No two shows will be the same as they will change based on the donations. “Free Box” will feature Mary Rose and Nathaniel Holder, two accomplished practitioners of Action Theater-- a practice of improvisation that has its roots in physical theater, dance and meditation. Oh, and we needn’t forget…at the end of the night, you get to raid the free box!
Yocto Theatre was founded on one simple principle, “Play it forward …” with our philosophy rooted firmly in the principles of the gift economy. All are welcome. None will be turned away.
